October 19, 2009 - Working on Photos
So Laura and I watched 'Marley & Me' last night, and I'm not afraid to admit that I cried.  Well, I didn't really cry... but I had tears in my eyes, and my throat started swelling up.  I had to leave the room for the last part of the movie, it was far too sad for me to handle.  Besides that I have been working on photos non-stop, I got my computer plugged in at the new house and started working endlessly Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (aside from some much needed breaks).  I got so many projects done, that I'm starting to shed away all the pressure that was weighing on me.  I have another batch of photos to work on tonight, and then I'll start getting them ready to send off to clients.  I really can't wait until they get them, I think they are going to like them a lot.  So yeah, check back in a couple days for a lot of new photos.

October 14, 2009 - Slick Shoes

So yesterday I left my house to head to work.  I love driving in the rain, as I love the rain in general.  Well it was raining and I went to make a left turn from one street to another and as I accelerated into the turn, as normal, I began to spin out.  Slightly bald tires and slick roads can cause this effect.  I became calm and collect as I tend to do in fun situations like that and just went with it.  I spun out good too, not like a little slide... no I did a full 360 and then some.  Lucky for my I know how to control my jeep, although you should never try to do a 360 in any jeep or truck because they tend to be a bit top heavy (if you're in a car with a low profile go for it).  So I realized quickly how the car was spinning and instead of fighting it I just took the Jeep into the spin and enjoyed the ride.  I spun her wheels to the right to move into the spin and then as I came around I slid the car into neutral, eased into the brakes and spun her wheels back to the left slowing the spin, and then back into drive and accelerated a bit more bring the car around and straightening it out.  I then eased into the brakes and brought the car to a nice slow stop.  Once the Jeep was fully stopped I moved it to a side street to check the tires and make sure everything was in order.  Another nice gentlemen who saw the whole thing pulled up next to me in his white truck.

Nice Guy - "You OK?"

Meself - "Yeah, I'm fine.  Just started sliding on that turn.  Checking the tires now."

Nice Guy - "Well you need to be careful, there are a lot of accidents already."

Meself - "Yeah, first rains.  I thought I was being careful, but yeah.  I just took the jeep into the slide to keep it from going into any houses.  Thanks for stopping though."

Nice Guy - "No problem, be careful."

Meself - "Will do, always am."

I wish I could hear his version of the story, as I'm sure it was fun watching me and the Super Jeep spinning down the street, keeping it in the same lane.  I'll admit that spinning out tends to be fun for me, though I never do it on purpose.  If you want to hear about my last spin out, the really good one, click over to the stories section and read the "405 story."  It's good stuff I promise you.

October 12, 2009 - Moving, Moving, Moving

You know what I love?  Watching two bus drivers pass each other and wave.  Bus drivers will always wave at each other when ever they pass by each other.  It doesn't matter if they work together, or two different companies.  They will always wave at each other.  It never fails.  Even though I would like to believe that every bus driver knows each other and attends secret meetings I know that isn't reality.  It's not like they hand you your bus drivers license and say, "OK, you passed, here is your license... but if we find out you don't wave at other bus drivers... oh, man.... just don't do that.  We'll have to take your bus driving license away."  It's like watching two dogs sniff each other.  It's more of sport now for me.  I get way too excited when I see two buses starting to get into 'passing must wave' distance.  So much fun.  Check it out... I'm not making this stuff up.

Other than that... just moving and getting into the new place.  I got about 80% of everything into the new house.  I spent my fist night there last night, and I'll be honest with you.  I'm kind of sad it's not haunted.  I was really hoping the house would tell me to (in a deep scary voice) "Get Out..."  Then I could fight the house.  More than I have already.  I almost broke the place a couple times now... and we did something silly that killed the power in part of the house.  We'll work on that tonight.  Being a home owner is just so much fun. Really, it is.  No Sarcasim in that last part at all.

On the photography side of things... I am getting backed up big time.  It's no fun to be honest.  I still have wedding photos to work on, engagement photos, and shooting more engagement photos tonight.  So much to do... so little time.  But I'm going to set up my computer tonight, and start getting things ready to go.  Hopefully I'll be able to start editing photos this weekend, and just work non stop to get the photos out to the clients, and get all caught up.  I'm just the type of person that likes to shoot the photos, and then get them back as soon as possible, and it's really wierd to know they are just sitting there and nothing is being done with them.  I can't stand it, and it's really bugging me.  So I'll get to work on that soon.

That's all for now.  Back to work, house, and more spending money.  That's the worste part... paying for everything and watching your bank account go down the drain.  Just no fun.  Have a great day.

October 08, 2009 - All Work and No Play Make Donald Go Something Something...

I didn't know how I wanted to title this, so I went with a Simpsons refrence because it's kind of how I feel.  I'm happy to say that my endless nights of manual labor is coming to a close.  No more madness house work day in and day out.  Just madness house work here and there.  I'm not saying I'm done, not by a long shot.  Starting Sunday, I actually get to spend a couple days moving everything fromt he Condo to the new House.  Sean is going to give me a hand though, and hopefully it doesn't rain so I can do everything cleanly.  I think I'm just going to try and do it all Sunday as to beat the potential rain fall.  Again... we'll see what happens.  A lot to do... a lot to do...

Wow, look at that new logo!  It's kind of big and in your face huh?  I didn't think it was going to take up so much space, but you know what?  I'm going to roll with it for now.  I think it may grow on me.  But hey, I guess you can't be on the site and forget where you are right?  I'm ordering buisness cards here soon and so I decided to update the logo while I was at it.  This was closer to my original idea I had a year ago when I updated the site.  I'm going to change the background color with the seasons too... it's going to be neat.

OK, well pray that the moving goes well and that I'm able to get everything over smoothly.

October 02, 2009 - I Got My Baby Back, Baby Back, Baby Back

I am whole again.  Complete.  Content.  No longer naked.  Happy.  I got my camera back.  Oh, it's been a long couple of days as I've been without my camera for the last two weeks.  But it's back in my camera bag, and sitting right next to me as I type this.  It's a good feeling to know that Canon took good care of my friend and sent her back safe and sound.  And working again to boot.  So yes, I'm able to take photos again.  But even though I'm able to take photos, I can't do anything about editing them... because there is house work that has to be done.  I'm so excited... really... really... excited.  OK, I'm over it already, but again... not. built. for. hard labor.  It's not me, it's not who I am.  I admit that now, I claim defeat.  The House Wins.  House One, Donald Zero.  I get it, but it has to be done.  So I'll be at the house working hard all day trying to get everything cleaned up and ready to start some painting this weekend.  Let's all hope things go according to plan.

If you were trying to view the site yesterday... I'm sorry.  It was down and out.  Trouble with the hosting server or something.  But it's back up now and all is well again... though it is acting a tad slower than normal.  Hopefully this is resolved soon.  Enjoy life and hug someone today.

October 01, 2009 - Body Type

I don't know if you've seen me lately... but I'm not built for physical labor.  Tell me you want to hike 20 miles in 3 days with 50 pounds on your back and I'm game.  Want to go hiking and bouldering for a day and I'm there.  Ask me to work on a house for 10 days strait doing manual labor... It's going to kick my butt.  I'm sore, tired, and just plain over it already.  But it's my place that I'm working on and have to have it ready in a week to start moving in.  So I'll be back at the house tonight doing more physical labor that I'm just not built for... *sigh*... but it's OK.

Beyond that fall is starting to creep on to the coastline.  It's been chilly these past couple days and that means it's time for me to go buy my old man sweater for the season.  Well, it's more of a Cosby sweeter, but still... time to go hunt and buy a comfortably ugly sweeter to wear on those chilly days.  I also realized yesterday that I'm really missing working on photos.  I have some wedding photos and engagement photos to get to work on, and I just can't wait to share them with everyone.  I think that as soon as I move into the house I'm going to put some projects on hold and just work on some photos.  My body is built for that.

September 28, 2009 - My First Tool Set
I think there are a couple signs that make it very clear that you have become a homeowner.  1) You begin to make daily trips to Home Depot.  2) Your wallet gets thinner, faster.  3) You start buying tools.  Well I bought my first tool set.  Sure everyone should be like Jesus, and I'm no different, I try to live a life of love and understanding, and sharing the good word.  But Jesus was a carpenter also, and I've never really tried to be a carpenter.  See, I'm good at ideas, creating, and pointing, but not so good and the actual work.  So I'm trying to change that and learn what I can.  I love being hands on and try to have a lot of fun with it.  Well with some advice from my brother and father, who are both very handy, I decided to buy a nice RYOBI set.  They're the cool tools that use the same battery, you just move around from tool to tool.  Either way, I'm having fun with it and learning how to work on some things myself.  Good fun stuff.  So over the weekend we tore some drywall off the ceiling, put some new drywall up, moved some light switches, took down some more paneling, and had some pizza and beer.  So things are coming along, and if we keep moving in the right direction we should be painting by the weekend, and getting carpet put in next week.  So let us hope and pray everything goes smoothly.

September 25, 2009 - Getting my camera back soon
I love Canon.  Seriously, they make the best digital cameras and have wonderful customer service.  I shipped my camera to Canon after it broke in just a years time, and what do they do?  They read over my letter about the problem, and the time frame the problem happened, and then they go in to fix it at no charge to me.  Covered.  Awesome.  This just days after I heard a story of them replacing a co-workers camera 8 years after it went bad.  Holy Wow.  If you're going to buy a digital camera, buy Canon.  It doesn't matter if it's a small camera or semi-pro, or professional.  They make the best gear and have the best work ethic around.  This, of course, is just my opinion.  Now... the next big question is this... should I buy the Canon 7D when it comes out....?

September 23, 2009 - Our First Home

Well papers are signed, escrow is closed, and all is well.  I got the keys to our first home on Monday morning, and started work pretty quickly.  We didn't waste any time in tearing down some walls, cutting in some windows, and ripping down some paneling.  It's a pretty fun process so far, but after working on the house endlessly the past two nights I'm ready for a break.  But I can't break, and can't slow down and have to keep on working.  I have about three weeks to get the house torn apart, rebuilt up, and painted to move in.  I can't wait to be all moved in, I really think these next few months of fixing up the house little by little is going to be a blast.  So we're excited and looking forward to the future.

On the camera side of things, I sent it off to repair.  I bought the camera September 20th, 2008, and it died on me September 19th, 2009.  One day before the warranty expired.  Though Canon does good work and has wonderful customer service, so I hope they will get the camera in soon and fix it for me so I can keep taking photos.  But if they don't... then I'll buy another camera.  Either way... I'm going to start taking photos again here soon.  I also have a bunch of photos to work on, however starting on those photos is some time away as all my time will go to fixing up the house.  So if there is a lack of updates... sorry.

September 19, 2009 - Camera goes bye bye

More important than this article... did you read yesterday's?  Or the one before that?  Have you looked at all the new photos?  OK... I'm happy you've done all that.  Well first off I'm going to say that there is no news on the house.  Hopefully Monday.  Second... the reason for this post.  My camera broke.  It doesn't take photos anymore and bites me when I try to force it to.  My last camera broke while I was shooting a wedding, just as the bride and groom walked down the isle at the end of the ceremony.  This time my camera brakes during a wedding just as the bride and groom walk down the isle.  Funny how things happen sometimes.  Now yes, I could be very upset about this, especially since the camera is only 1 year and 1 month old and the warranty was only good for one year.  Yes, I could cry and be very sad.  But I'm going to look at this as a good thing.  It broke as I did a wedding, so I have the money in the bank to buy a new one.  I got a lot of great use out of that camera, and now I can upgrade from my 40D to a 50D.  God is truly giving me some ups during my downs, and I thank him for that.  So life goes on, and we shall see what happens when I take my camera in.  Who knows... maybe... just maybe they'll look at the date of purchase and say, 'that's not right.  Here is a replacement.'  I don't know the chances of that... but who knows right.

Oh, and the wedding went very smooth thanks to my backup camera.  I owe my buddy Jason HUGE for letting me borrow his camera, it saved my butt.  It was such a blast to get to spend the day with such a loving couple, Demi and Rich were an absolute pleasure to work with.  So I'll start working on these photos soon and post them in the near future.  Until my next post take care and God Bless.

September 18, 2009 - Smith Engagement
Do I have some fun photos to show you.  We had a lot of fun shooting these photos, and I think they turned out really great.  So I meet Kenny and Victoria at the beach for some engagement photos and talk about shooting their wedding that's coming up in November.  Well I talked to them for a bit and just started getting some shots.  They are very much in love, and that helped them become comfortable in front of the camera.  They even let me have some fun and grab some photos that I wanted to get.  They really let me have full control of the style of the photos.  So because they let me have control... I had fun with it and threw them in the ocean.  I've done some photos before having people stand in the water, but I haven't done it with a couple before and have always wanted to try it out.  Both of them were willing and ready so into the water we went.  Surprisingly though, the Pacific wasn't that cold on this September day.  Well anyways, there are a lot of really cool photos you can go check out.  We had so much fun shooting the photos that they hired me for the wedding right then and there.  I can't wait to hear back from them when they see the finished product.  Enjoy them.

September 17, 2009 - Dragonforce

Sean, Jake, and I went to go see Dragonforce last night in Ventura, and wow.  Just wow.  Those guys are amazing musicians to watch play.  They have so much energy and probably too much talent for their own good.  It was good to go to a metal show and watch them play and smile at the same time.  It's good to see a band just go out and have fun while they play, it really made the show that much better.

Other than that I noticed that a lot of other photographers are doing photo blogs.  I can really see how it would be nice to have a story to go along with the photos as you show them off.  I think I may start doing that myself, but I just can't decide if I'm going to do that through this main update page, or create a photo blog page.  I think it would be nice if people could go through a photo blog page and see nothing but photos, but at the same time I wouldn't mind having it be the first thing people see.  But then it gets mixed in with all these other non-photo updates.  The parts where I just rant like I am now.  Maybe you should e-mail me and let me know what you think.  I would love to hear from you and your opinions, and if there is anything on this site you think I should change or make better let me know.  And don't tell me to create a next button in the photography page... I've been working on it and it's really, really difficult.

Oh, and I heard back from my last set of clients after posting their photos.  They loved them and I can't wait to do more photos with them and their kids.  I think Becki had a great comment to the photos, saying that I did a great job capturing Luke's mellowness.  I got a great laugh out of that and just love the way she put it.  Well I have some engagement photos to shoot this afternoon that I'll post tomorrow night, and then it's a weekend of photography with a wedding tomorrow, and engagement/family photos on Sunday.  Which is amazing timing seeing that I should be closing on our house tomorrow and getting a key.  Funny how life works sometimes.  I get the key to my first home and can't do anything for the first three days.  Oh well... I roll with the punches.  If the key does come through... expect an update on all that Saturday night.  That's if everything falls into place like I want it too.

So really all it boils down to is this, Dragonforce was amazing live, e-mail me what you think about a photo blog, check out the latest set of photos I posted, and check for updates Saturday.  Take care till then.

September 15, 2009 - Children

So I've managed to work in two sets of children photos in the past week.  It's been such a blast, and I seem to go on these streaks of not taking kids photos, and I forget how much fun it can be.  The first set of photos I did was for a fresh little Chloe Gutierrez.  At only 7 days old last Thursday she was just so small and tiny and fun to photograph.  I also did some family photos for them and some photos of their other daughter Kalie.  She was just a pleasure to work with, and at 4 years old she is already quite the model.  The other set of photos were with the Dreier kids.  They were a lot of fun to work with, and little Luke was so great with the camera.  He is only 4 years old, and one of the only kids that didn't cry or get upset once.  Their kids and allowed to get upset with the camera, but it's always neat when they don't.  He would just stare at the tree's blowing in the wind, watch his sister, dance, or laugh and smile at his parents.  Both families were amazing to work with, and I only hope to do more photos with them, and watch their kids grow.  Way too much fun.

In other, non photography news, I signed papers on my house today.  The last big step, and if everything goes smoothly I should be getting a key to me and my family's new place.  I'll have more on that later though, so stay tuned.  Till next time though... take care.

September 11, 2009 - New Videos

So I just finished uploading a bunch of new videos to my youtube page.  If you're curious about what I've been working on at the station then you can view them there.  Or just watch TV and they pop up from time to time.  You can get to my page through the links section if you want to watch the spots.  I have one spot in there that is my first attempt at Kinetic Text, it was a lot of fun to put together.  It's tough to make a commercial when you have no video to work with, so I just had the words dance around the screen.  It's good stuff, but still amateur at best.  Seriously search Kinetic Text on youtube and watch some of the amazing videos people are putting together.

In other news I did some more newborn/child/family photos yesterday that turned out wonderful.  I can't wait to post them next week and hear back from the family.  I'm about 3/4 the way through editing the photos and they are looking really good.  I finally got to do a photo I've been wanting to do for awhile now... and well you'll just have to wait to see them.  I'm also taking some more newborn photos early next week, so I'm thinking I'll just post both of those shoots at the same time.  Finding time next week to do that between, work, closing on a house, editing photos, and starting the moving process should be a lot of fun.  But fun I can handle I'm sure.

Ok, that is it for now.  I'm off to SeaWorld this weekend with the Family.  I'm not taking my camera either because we're going to be sitting in splash zones letting Faith get a nice fishy smell all over her.  It's going to be a blast.  I'll say hello to Shamu for you and punch an arrogant Dolphin for you too, and if dreams come true... and I always pray they do... I'll hug a penguin.  I love penguins.

September 9, 2009 - Nine
If you're going to make any bets today, I would put my money on 9.  Today is 09-09-09.  Let's add to that a bit now, It's September... 9 letters.  Wednesday... 9 letters.  9+9=18, 1+8=9.  9x9=81, 8+1=9 again (That part could be cheating because adding the two digits of any sum when multiplied by 9 is going to be 9).  It's also the 252 day in the year.  2+5+2=... you got it... 9.  Honestly I wouldn't read into it that much.  However, I am spending my day answering my "no's" in German.  Nine.

September 08, 2009 - Photo Updates

Tomorrow is going to be 09.09.09 and I think that's kind of cool, not as cool as next year will be with 10.10.10... but that is a horse of a different color.  So this weekend was full of photos, and it was fun.  I wish I had some photos from the airshow to share with you... but there wasn't one.  "The Santa Maria Airshow: Thunder Over the Valley" ended up being "The Santa Maria Ground Show: Peace & Quite Over The Valley," or if you asked my mom, "Blunder Over the Valley."  There were no demo's and all the planes where grounded.  I did get one good photo of Faith in a chopper and that was cute.  But to this weekends photos.

Chloe Ortiz - Saturday I did some photos of Chloe Ortiz who was only weeks old.  She was a little firecracker and loved to pose for the lens from time to time.  It was a blast to take some photos of her and her parents and ended up being a quick and wonderful shoot.  I got some great photos and I think you'll like looking them over.  The colors that pop from the photo with her skin tone, clothing, and blankets is just amazing.  I love it when everything works out the way it's supposed to.  Though it's hard for it not to with newborn photos.

Gianna Simkins Baptism - Remember those photos of Jordan by the train tracks?  Well his little sister got Baptized and they asked me to snap some photos of the event.  Of course I was honored to do so, and did.  The church was a bit darker than I like to shoot in, which ended up giving a little more grain than desired on the photos, but I think the shots are good and I'm really curious to see what the photos would look like printed on canvas.  I have to make sure to tell them to try that out.  There was one great moment though when Gianna was getting oil placed on her head and chest and she smilled ever so lovingly.  I got the photo and her Dad's face is just as classic really.

So check out all the new photos and check back soon, as I'm doing some more newborn photos later this week and hopefully making a trip to San Diego this weekend.  We shall see what happens.

August 31, 2009 - Prayer Request

So I'm set to close on a house in the next 30 days.  If everything goes smoothly, and with no major bridges to cross, I could have a house for me and mine very soon.  It's scary making the leap from renting to buying, but it's something that needs to be done in order to support my future wife and daughter.  So I'm hoping you can say a prayer for me and think happy thoughts.  I hope this doesn't read as a shameless request, but I will be honest in saying that I am nervous, so I hope you keep me in your prayers and think happy thoughts for me.  Hopefully everything will go smoothly and I'll be doing home repairs here very soon.  Much thanks.

August 27, 2009 - Photos of Faith

Did you read the update from this morning?  It's right below this one.  Read that first...

... So did you read the new story in the 'Funny Faith' section?  Good stuff right?  Go read that if you haven't...

...So I just uploaded some new photos of the little love.  I decided while Laura was at school we would have some fun together and well... I would do what I do best and take some photos also.  I tried to get her to laugh, dance, and pose, and I think I got some great photos.  She is such a beautiful little model.  And after you read the story about 'Climbing Faith' check out the "Faith_89" photo, it really is a fun photo to look at after knowing the story behind it.  My favorite photo from this batch though is "Faith_85."  I just love the way she seems to be contemplating life, or wondering why I'm being so silly and asking her to sit and stand everywhere.  No matter what she is thinking... it's a great photo if you ask me.

Well it was super warm today, and that means a warm night, so I'm off for a walk in the nice warm summer night.  Going to look at some stars and contemplate life.  Enjoy the photos.

August 27, 2009 - Good Stuff

I just wrote up a story about Faiths adventure from yesterday, and added it to the Funny Faith section.  It's a pretty good read I think.  Beyond that no major updates today.  Still being patient on future house stuff, and praying that everything goes through escrow smoothly.  Maybe keep me in your prayers if you have a chance.  Oh, and I went to see 'Inglorious Bastards' the other night, you know... the new Quentin Tarantino flick.  I loved it, and can't wait to see it again.  Though I'm sure that wont be till I can buy it on Blu-Ray.  I've always liked his movies, but that one is my favorite by far.  Just a solid good movie.  Go see it while it's still in theaters if you can.

So beyond that little movie rant, I hope all is well with you and yours and check back soon as I'll be posting a lot of photos in the next couple of weeks.  I have some newborn photos coming up, some family photos, a Baptism to photograph, and of course... more Faith.  Oh, and they SM airshow is this weekend too.  Should be good if not great.

August 19, 2009 - Jordan Vallely
Posted some new photos of Jordan Vallely playing with some trains.  His mom got a hold of me and thought it was time for some new photos just before his 4th birthday.  Well she told me he liked trains and so we went to do some photos on the train tracks.  He was so excited when we got there, telling me about the freight cars and how they couple together.  It's funny how I forget they are called freight cars.  I just call them trains.  I got put in my place by a 4 year old.  He did a great job though and we got some very fun photos.  I've talked to his mom a few days after taking the photos and she says that he can't stop talking about his photos with the freight cars.  So I'm sure they are going to love them, check them out for yourself to... come on... you know you want to.  Chooo Chooo!!!!
